The Two Sides of Medicine

Throughout time there have always been two opposing points of view as to how to maintain good health, or how to regain it after having lost it. This
conflict has continued since ancient times … and no doubt will continue well into the future.

One ‘side’ believes good health is as a result of outside intervention… drugs, surgery etc. The other ‘side’ believes that good health results from
living in harmony with natural law… correct nutrition… cleanliness etc.

The ancient Greeks had terms for these two groups of people. As was often the case in those days each group came under the umbrella of a ‘god’. One was ‘Asklepios’… the god of medicine, whose proponents advocated the ‘intervention’ approach. These people were known as ‘Asklepians’. Those who believed that the secret of good health resulted from living in
harmony with nature looked up to ‘Hygeia’… Goddess of health. These people were known as ‘Hygeian’.

Asklepians versus Hygeian

Both sides tended to be critical of the other… nothing much has changed over the ages. Modern mainstream western medicine takes the ‘Asklepian’ approach. However, in recent years the Hygeian approach which has always
been the underlying principle behind Chinese traditional medicine has gained much ground. The increase in the popularity of the ‘Hygeian’ approach is no doubt due to a combination of several factors:

* Dissatisfaction of traditional mainstream medicine.
* Increasing cases of medical ‘misadventure’. (Hospitals are places to stay away from)
* Awareness that good health is primarily a personal responsibility… not of overworked physicians.
* An increasing awareness that the medical industry is highly influenced by drug companies and that there are often better, safer and more economic
natural alternatives to drugs.

In spite of this justified ‘swing’ away from mainstream medicine, mainstream medicine does have a place in everyone’s health program … apart from the obvious ones in treating accident cases or chronic urgent illness. So, if you are already a ‘Hygeian’ don’t over look the benefits that mainstream medicine can offer to you in your overall quest for good health and longevity.

These benefits are primarily in the early detection of a pending disease that you may not as yet be aware of!

An example

Let’s assume that you are over 40 years of age… you are healthy, fit and not overweight. You eat well, you don’t smoke, don’t drink excessively and rarely get sick. You probably think that you will live forever… well at least
into ripe old age! Right? Maybe… or maybe not.

Reflect on this for a moment. Have you ever known anyone around this age that has died suddenly to your amazement because you thought they were so healthy? That person may even have been a competitive athlete!

Let me tell you a true story.

About 15 years ago a friend of mine who was around 40, a former competitive body builder who was still in great shape and extremely fit was at a lake water-skiing. He was watching some young water-skiers doing some ‘tricks’.

Being the competitive person that he was he waited until they came in and went down to the waters edge and said “Now, I’ll show you how to really do it”. Those were the last words he ever uttered… a couple of minutes later
he was lying on the ground dead of a massive heart attack.

My friend died instantly. He could just as easily had a stroke which he may or may not have recovered from… which would also have been a major tragedy.

Tragedies can often be avoided

Tragedies like this happen every day and the results are devastating not only to the victims but also their families, friends and loved ones. Sadly, many of these tragedies could have been averted … if more people were aware of
their risk factors and could correct any abnormalities before it was too late!

Now back to the point of this story. My friend died of a blockage in his artery. Only takes one! If 15 years ago the technology for measuring ALL the ‘predictors’ which indicate your risk of such an event were available AND
my friend had understood what they meant he would probably still be showing those young fellows how to do water-skiing tricks!

How many thousands of people are still dying needlessly because they do not know how to take advantage of current technology … or, in some cases are so opposed to mainstream medicine that they do not take advantage of
the ‘good’parts!

OK… what should you do?

First of all, if you are over 35 and have not had a blood
test within the last few years … arrange one… NOW!

Get a general one, which tests for:

* Cholesterol. Both LDL and HDL
* Triglycerides
* Homocysteine
* Lipoproteins
* Liver Function
* Renal Function
* Plasma Glucose

If you are a man over 40 make sure you also have a PSA. (Prostate Specific Antigen) test) Hint: There is recent evidence that suggests that if you have had sex within the previous 72 hours your PSA levels could be affected.
Play it safe and abstain for 2 – 3 days before your test.

Irrespective of your gender ask your physician if any other tests are also recommended for you. If each test is within the normal range, that’s great, you can rest easy knowing that you are unlikely to be subject to any
immediate health risk. You can then direct your efforts towards improving the way you feel and slowing down your aging process.

If any of your tests are abnormal you will need to do something about bringing them back to within ‘normal’ ranges … and possibly be subject to more tests. It is the treatment of any abnormalities from these blood tests
that create a potential conflict between ‘Askelepians’ and ‘Hygeians’.

Here is an example of potential conflict

Let’s say your tests show that your cholesterol is ‘out of whack’, your ‘mainstream’ physician may first propose lowering your intake of diet cholesterol. That’s unlikely to be successful as ingested cholesterol only
makes up a relatively small percentage of blood cholesterol.

They will next likely propose one of the cholesterol lowering drugs commonly known as ‘statins’. These are drugs that work by blocking an enzyme that your liver needs to manufacture cholesterol. (Up to 80% of your blood cholesterol is manufactured by your liver, NOT from the ingestion of cholesterol within your diet).

These statin drugs are very powerful and have been known to cause serious side effects including deaths. In fact Bayers were recently forced to withdraw their statin drug from the market place because of ‘unacceptable’ levels of fatalities. In spite of these risks, sales of statin drugs amount to billions of dollars per year and are commonly prescribed.

It’s ironic that there are natural alternatives to these statin drugs which can assist in lowering cholesterol, and do it safely, and without side effects. But the general public hears very little about them as they are not patentable and there is not the financial incentive for the big corporate’s to promote them.

The same principle applies for many different ailments. There can be many legitimate methods of treatments. What is important is that you seek out the natural alternatives and apply them before agreeing to subject yourself to the
negative side effects of pharmaceutical drugs.

Pharmaceutical drugs are ‘blockers’ whereas natural remedies are ‘enablers’

Pharmaceutical drugs are ‘blockers’ and do not normally heal the underlying ailment. They generally work by suppressing natural functions such as certain enzymes which I mentioned earlier when giving the ‘statin’ example. Because of this process, results are often ‘instant’ and as such there is sometimes a place for these powerful prescription drugs in the case of life threatening emergencies.

In contrast, natural products such as herbs, vitamins etc are ‘enablers’. They work at correcting the cause of the ailment which is often a nutrient deficiency of some sort. The results are not immediate and have to be measured in weeks, or even months.

If you have a serious ailment, work with your physician to try and correct it… by first using natural remedies. If she or he is not familiar with the treatment you would like to try, do some further research and get hold of supporting
information so you are in a better position to discuss the options intelligently. If your physician has a closed mind to natural remedies it may be wise to ask around and find another qualified physician with an open mind.

Want To Live Longer? Detox Today!

Never before has the need to detoxify our body system become more important than today. With the advancement of technology there are now more things that negatively affect our health and our environment.

The air we breathe, the water we drink, even the food we eat is polluted in one way or the other. This is because the air we breathe has carbon byproducts and the water we drink has heavy metals and the food we eat is not as natural as it should be. Most of it is chemically enhanced or genetically modified one way or the other.

All these things make the statement that “We live in a very toxic age” very true!

In order to live longer and healthier there is a growing need to detoxify our bodies. If you don’t detox regularly, these poisonous substances from the air you breath, the water you drink and the food you eat will lead to ill-health such as insomnia, gastric problems, poor skin, premature aging due to accumulation of toxins over the years and ultimately untimely death.

You can decide to naturally detox or take herbs and vitamins to detox. A lot of people choose to detox naturally because they know the body has its own ability to clean itself up.

Our bodies have natural defenses and resources that work to constantly to clean up our systems, even when we sleep.

Unfortunately, most people’s bodies are unable to detox mainly because of poor health. If the body is performing at optimal level, it should be able to detox itself.

As I’ve mentioned before, because of the polluted air, water and food we eat, it becomes impossible for anyone’s body to perform at optimal level. There is always some form of pollution affecting the body one way or the other.

That is why it is necessary to use some detox herbs and vitamins to assist the body in detoxifying itself. These detox herbs and vitamins can help to restore the body to its optimal level, thereby giving it the strength to detox it self.

These detox herbs and vitamins and some healthy habits can really go a long way in helping the body to take care of it self, thereby allowing us to live longer.

So, if you want to live longer and healthier, there is the need to constantly detoxify your system either naturally or with the help of detox herbs and vitamins.

Don’t Be a Victim of Acetaminophen Poisoning

Tylenol is one of the most common pain-relievers on the market today. It is a well-trusted brand name, not only for pain relief, but fever reduction as well. The key ingredient in Tylenol, acetaminophen, is found in many other drugs on the market as well, but Tylenol is the most well known. Many people who are afflicted with chronic pain, turn to Tylenol or other acetaminophen based pain killers to help them deal with their pain and be able to function every day.

People who are in considerable pain, will often do anything they can to make the pain go away. Some make the mistake of thinking that taking more acetaminophen will reduce their pain faster and make it stay away longer than the recommended dosage does. Little do these people know, however, having too much acetaminophen in your system can lead to other serious health problems. Just by taking a double dose of acetaminophen, you are subjecting your liver to a possibly lethal dose, which could lead to liver failure. People who are in pain don’t realize the consequences of taking too much medicine, they just want something to help them now. Thousands of people each year are being hospitalized for acetaminophen overdose, and hundreds die each year, not from intentionally overdosing, but misuse.

A common cause for this problem is that acetaminophen is found in most pain relievers on the market today. Many people will take Tylenol, then an hour or so later, turn around and take a different brand name pain killer, not realizing they are taking a double dose of basically the same ingredients. Many diseases and conditions cause chronic pain, such as arthritis, migraines, lupus, even down to the simple cold and flu that we all fall victim to at one time or another. In the search for something to lessen the pain and make day to day living more bearable, many people will inadvertently feed too much acetaminophen into their systems. It is important to understand that just because you may take a different type of pain killer, it is still likely to have the same active ingredients as the one you took before that didn’t work. Taking larger doses will not lessen the pain any faster than a normal dose, however it will put you at a substantially increased health risk.

Some people are more susceptible to the side effects caused by many medicines than others. Even a normal dosage of acetaminophen can sometimes lead these people straight to the emergency room. It is important to keep in mind the effects that medicine have on you individually, before you start popping pills.

It is a good idea to start reading the labels of any medicine you are considering taking, especially to find out what the active ingredients are. You are probably better off not mixing over the counter pain relievers, just pick one that works for you and follow the recommended dosage. Avoid the temptation to take more thinking it will work better, as odds are high that it will do more harm to your system than good. If you are a person who suffers from chronic daily pain, you should see your doctor for recommendations on what to do to help alleviate it, rather than taking treatment into your own hands with over the counter products.

Pharmaceutical guide

If asked to name one thing that affects our life in most phases one would hardly say pharmaceuticals. But wait this is a fact that most of us since our birth depend on pharmaceuticals in one-way or other. Definitely by age our dependence on pharmacy products increases but even teenagers and young ones consume a big percentage of pharmaceutical derivatives.

Pharmaceuticals play a vital role in our day-to-day living. And hence their rising costs are destined to be our major concern. The ever growing prices of pharmaceutical products severely pinches one’s pocket, cause this is one area where there is no choice of take or leave. If a person is suffering from certain disease and the doctor prescribes him any medicines he must purchase it whether it suits his pocket or not. One is left with no choice but to pay the chemist. Hence there is a great need to regulate the prices of drugs, at least to watch that its price is not much above the cost incurred plus a marginal profit for the manufacturing company. As of now many market leaders are found to price their monopoly drugs at a very high rate. Even medicines or regular use are very costly. Drugs sold by prescription being much more expensive than those sold over the counter by the chemist. Hence, a person is often tempted to go for over the counter choice.

Big pharmaceutical players in the market also pay much attention to research and development of new medications possible. A big amount of money is invested in the R & D branch of the industry. Based on the market requirements and demands companies try hard to invent a suitable drug to cure any ailment. Millions are spend in this type of research. And once any company hopes to have created any new medicine it has to pass through many different stages to get the approval of the drug controlling authority, FDA. FDA governs the stages of research, development and manufacture that have been undergone for any new drug before being exposed to consumers. Only after it has approved and given its quality assurance any drug shall be sold to public.

Even before any drug is presented to FDA it undergoes intensive testing which is carried on animals and even humans. These tests confirm about the effectiveness of the medicine and makes sure that the invented drug does not have any serious side effects. Animals that are used to carry these tests often raise a controversy among the environmentalists. They strongly object about animals being tortured for the benefit of mankind. While the companies defend by saying that it is important to save mankind and those animals can easily reproduce. Whatever be the case this controversy goes on forever without a suitable solution. All this research work is necessary so that the ultimate consumer gets nothing but the best.

With the high growth rate in the pharmaceutical industry all the companies employed in this sector are facing though competition. There is a constant endeavor to attract the consumers by direct marketing and efficient advertising plans targeted towards customers. We all need to be aware of what types of drugs are available in the market and take our judgment meticulously and not get carried away by advertisements.

What are Allergies?

Allergies (Type I Hypersensitivity) are actually a malfunction of our immune system that triggers our body to become hypersensitized and react immunologically to typically non-immunogenic substances. The substances that cause our bodies to become this way are called allergens.

In 1906, Viennese pediatrician, Clemens von Pirquet, first coined the term “allergies” after he observed that certain symptoms of his patients might have been a response to outside allergens, like dust, pollen, or certain foods.

Signs and Symptoms

You know your allergies are starting if you experience swelling in parts of your body. This is called local or systemic inflammatory response, caused by the presence of allergens. For instance, if your allergies affect you in the nose, you will experience swelling of the nasal mucosa (allergic rhinitis). During this condition, you will probably find yourself performing the “nasal salute” more than necessary as itching of your nose will induce you to wipe your nose in an upward direction.

On the other hand, if the allergies hit you in the eyes, redness and itching of the conjunctiva often follows. Other common signs of allergies are wheezing and dyspnoea, bronchoconstriction, and sometimes outright attacks of asthma. You may also experience various rashes, such as eczema, hives, and contact dermatitis.

Systemic allergic responses are more serious compared to local symptoms. Depending on the severity of your response, allergies can cause cutaenous reactions, bronchoconstriction, edema, hypotension, coma, and even death.

Hay fever is actually one example of minor allergies caused by airborne pollen. But aside from environmental factors, allergies may also be triggered by medications.

Why do we get allergies?

Our immune system is a well-trained and disciplined bio-weapon that protects our bodies from harmful substances. Its mechanics is so amazing that it can identify and destroy many foreign invaders. However, as amazing as our immune system is, it makes mistakes sometimes. And so we have allergies, which, as we mentioned, results from a hypersensitive immune system.

The hypersensitized immune system misidentifies an otherwise innocuous substance as harmful, and then attacks the substance with a degree of ferocity that is greater than required. As a result, we experience problems that can range from mildly inconvenient to uncomfortable to total failure of major organs of the body.

How does the immune system go into a hypersensitized state?

There are actually several ideas on this. Some schools premise that allergies are almost always triggered by protein. Certain persons have faulty genetic codes so that their lymphocytes or the white blood cells (the stuff that your immune system is made of) are unable to property distinguish between the threatening and the non-threatening proteins.

So, for example, when you ingest protein from shellfish, your lymphocytes think that the substance is trying to invade the body. As a result, they produce large amounts of antibodies which attach themselves to mast cells and basophils throughout the body. This is known as the sensitizing exposure and this is the very reason why you suddenly develop allergies.

ADD And College Students – How Does It Affect Them?

Unfortunately, Attention Deficit Disorder does not necessarily fade with age. Many people that suffer as a child will continue to suffer as a teen, as well as into adulthood. However, this disorder may affect people differently at different stages in their life.

College can be a difficult time for some students. For many, this represents a time of breaking free and starting their new uninhibited lives. This may be an exciting and emotional time. How does a college student with ADD face such a time?

For a person with Attention Deficit Disorder, this may prove to be a harsh time of transformation. Typically coming from families that were especially doting and accommodating to their situation, they are thrown in to a new environment to fend for themselves. One of the basic behavior modification techniques in training an ADD child is through structure, routine, and habit. At once, all of this is taken and it becomes the student’s responsibility to recreate this structured life they once had. Of course, a person with ADD is typically disorganized and unstructured. So, they may have a difficult time having the discipline to enact such stringent requirements for themselves.

Another aspect to consider is the increased difficulty in the academic load in college as compared to high school and the additional responsibility put on the students. Not only will the student be responsible for their own organization and structure, they will do so under more stress and academic pressure. This increasingly more difficult schoolwork is not made easier by the student’s general inattentive nature, distractibility, and impulsiveness. The very core of ADD makes college more difficult. With any luck, the student has spent enough time over the last few years regulating their own behavior that they will easily be able to in this new environment.

For the most part, the same steps should be taken in college to deal with ADD as was necessary in high school and other grades. To be effective, a student should carry some type of organizational calendaring system or digital organizer. In college, they do not hold the students’ hands like they do in high school – once an assignment is made, it is expected to be turned in on time, without reminders. Therefore, it becomes imperative to keep up with deadlines and dates. Students should also create structure and organization in their dorm or apartment and utilize the same skills they have been developing for years.

Banish Insomnia — Sleep Safe With Amino Acids

There is something most uncivilized about living in a civilized world. What is it? It’s hard to get good night’s sleep.

Some of this punishing sleep deprivation is voluntary. Too much to do. Too much to see. Too many responsibilities. Not enough sleep.

For many people, sleep is a desperate need. People toss and turn, but sleep does not come. Others get to sleep only to awaken later in the middle of the night. In the morning, thousands (millions?) head off to work bleary-eyed, trying to be productive. It’s a vicious cycle.

Eventually exhaustion can get bad enough that a person seeks help from their doctor, who obligingly writes a prescription for some pills. At first, they work well and the sleepless person gets some much needed relief.

However, the real nightmare is about to begin. After awhile, the sleeping pills stop working. Unfortunately, by then, the person is addicted. The doctor has been told the drugs are not addictive by the drug manufacturer. Anecdotal evidence, however, suggests drug manufacturers aren’t giving doctors the whole story. There’s big money in having a “non-addictive” sleeping pill. As the saying goes, “Money Talks.”

It turns out that there is another way, but not one health insurance will pay for. Because there are no large drug companies standing behind this alternative, health insurance companies don’t recognize it as a therapeutic choice.

Contrary to what doctors usually are taught both in medical schools and from drug companies, nutrition plays a large role in getting a good night’s sleep. There are a number of vitamins and minerals that support sleep. An internet search for “insomnia vitamins” and “insomnia minerals” provides a wealth of information about these nutritional supports.

Staying away from nicotine, caffeine and alcohol helps in getting a good night’s sleep, as does having a good diet and getting regular exercise

Amino acids are lesser known for their importance in being able to get enough sleep, but they are just as vital. L-Tryptophan, for example, is called “essential” for a reason. People can’t live without it.

Without enough L-Tryptophan, or its easier-to-get cousin, 5-HTP (5-Hydroxy Tryptophan), human beings are not able to calm down. Sound familiar? Usually, about 100 mg of 5-HTP provides enough relaxation that sleep becomes an option for an average adult. Experimentation to discover an appropriate dosage is safe and easy.

Sleep becomes an option with enough L-Tryptophan in the brain. This is where L-Theanine, another commonly available amino acid, comes in. It’s a sleep time amplifier, providing more rest in less time. A dose of 100 mg at bed time is a good starting place.

Finally, GABA (yet another amino acid) works for some people. Most sleeping pills work on the same part of the brain that uses GABA. Unfortunately, for technical reasons, just taking GABA does not always work that well. Trying 200 mg at bed time is a good starting place. It may or may not work.

Anyone having trouble getting a good night’s sleep can leave the sleeping pills in the cabinet. Instead, trying some 5-HTP, L-Theanine and GABA is an inexpensive option. These supplements are a safe and non-addictive alternative.

Bird Flu: What are the Real Chances of a Pandemic

Avian influenza, or bird flu as it is more commonly known, was discovered over a century ago in Italy and to date, there are several strains of the bird flu virus. Many of these strains have become deadly, particularly the H5 and H7 strains. The deadliest one to date, the H5N1 strain, has reportedly killed 70 people in Asia alone in the last two years. Many scientists believe that if proper action is not taken, bird flu has the potential to be the fourth major pandemic in the world.

Influenza has affected the lives of so many people, particularly in the 20th century. The Spanish Flu of 1918, Asian Flu of 1957 and Hong Kong Flu of 1968 killed at least 20 million people worldwide.

Bird flu can spread quickly since the bird flu virus is typically found in the intestines of migrant birds that travel great distances. Bird flu spreads when other birds, chickens or geese come in contact with an infected bird’s saliva, nasal secretions or feces. Birds fall ill and die within 48 hours of contracting the virus. Humans who interact with infected birds without proper protective gear are also at risk.

There are four reasons that scientists believe that bird flu could become a pandemic.

1. Many countries, specifically third world countries, do not have the proper facilities in place to take care of the bird flu problem. Without these facilities, there is a high possibility of the bird flu virus spreading.

2. No vaccine has been fully developed and tested to fight bird flu virus. Using amantadine and rimantadine, two drugs that are used to treat influenza, on those infected with the virus has not been successful. Even though research is underway, there is still no known cure for bird flu in humans. Should a pandemic happen, it will take at least four months to produce vaccines that can be distributed to people suffering from the disease.

3. The avian influenza virus affects birds and pigs. However, because the virus has different strains and they easily mutate, scientists fear the virus could evolve into something worse and affect humans directly. The virus could become airborne and be transmitted from one human to another.

4. People who work in farms and are in the poultry and livestock industry many not have the proper equipment and adequate protection against the disease.

A human who is possibly infected with bird flu could show symptoms similar to human influenza. A person with bird flu will experience fever, sore throat and muscle pains. Because of the similarity of symptoms between bird flu and human flu, a person with bird flu could be mistakenly diagnosed with human flu. However, advanced symptoms of bird flu include eye infections and respiratory problems, which could become life threatening.
In 1997, when an outbreak of bird flu occurred in Hong Kong, 18 people were infected and six were killed. As a quick response, Hong Kong’s entire poultry population, which was estimated at 1.5 million, was killed. Many believe that this rapid response to the bird flu outbreak was the best solution and helped avert it from becoming a pandemic.

In general, there is little risk of most people getting infected with bird flu since it requires close or direct interaction with infected birds or bird feces. Since the number of people that has been infected with the disease is still low and confined to a few children and adults, there is no serious cause of alarm yet. However, for those who have constant contact with birds, the risk becomes very high during outbreaks in local poultry

Because of the constant and rapid advances in technology today, in addition to lessons learned from past major pandemics, there is hope that bird flu will be prevented from becoming another global pandemic.

Can Flaxseed Enhance Our Immune System?

Flaxseed improves every molecule in the body: it improves the quality of hair, nails, and skin, as well as helping you to lose weight or bulk up it lowers cholesterol, blood pressure and prevents arthritis and cancers.

How Do I Prepare Golden Flaxseeds?
Golden flax can be purchased whole, ground and in oil form. We recommend that you obtain golden flax seeds in the whole seed form. provides the highest nutrional value. We recommend that you grind a portion of your golden flax seeds as needed. The golden flax seeds can be ground into a coarse powder form using a coffee grinder or electric flax grinder. Uncrushed flax seeds will not be digested and will thus pass through you undigested.

Some of the Undisputed Benefits of Flaxseed Includes:

1. Better regulation of blood sugar levels
2. Eases inflammatory tissue conditions, including arthritis
3. Alleviation of dry skin, eczema and psoriasis
4. Enhanced immune system
5. Increased metabolic rate with a positive impact on weight management
6. Helps with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)
7. Natural laxative

What the Medics Says
Medical researchers in New Zealand provide convincing evidence that an increased consumption of fish oils helps reduce the risk of developing prostate cancer.

What can I do with Whole Flaxseeds?
The small, golden flax seeds add nutrition when added to bread doughs, pancake, muffin or cookie mixes. When sprinkled on top of any of these before baking, they also add crunch and taste.

We feel golden flaxseed can be an easy and extremely beneficial addition to everyone’s diet. Flax seed, also known as linseed, is noted to have high nutritional value, making it a priority choice of food for health conscious people.

Flaxseed is the latest craze to take over Hollywood and is credited with improving hair, skin and nail quality, aiding weight loss, and preventing diseases such as arthritis, high cholesterol and high blood pressure. Unlike other Hollywood health fads, it won’t break the bank.

Can Flaxseed Prevent Heart Disease?

Flaxseed and Heart Disease!

Did you know that some research on statin drugs show only a 1% reduction in arterial plaque? Instead of spending thousands of dollars on a prescription drug, you should at least consider a healthier and far less expensive dietary supplement like flax seed.

The American Heart Association found that women with increased dietary intake of the isoflavones and lignans found in soy and flax decreased their risk for atherosclerosis and arterial degeneration. Flax is by far the richest source of lignans, according to the Journal of the American College of Nutrition.

Can Flaxseed Prevent Cancer too?

Recently small studies of cancer patients in America who consumed flaxseeds have produced some encouraging results. In one study men with prostate cancer who ate an ounce of ground flaxseed a day as part of a very low fat diet were able to slow the progress of their cancers between the time they were diagnosed and the time of surgery. A similar study of women awaiting surgery for breast cancer found that those who ate a flaxseed muffin daily had a slower tumour growth rate. Various studies of animals, too, suggest some anti-cancer benefit from flaxseed.

How Do I Store Flaxseeds?

Whole golden flax seed which is clean, dry and of good quality, can be stored at room temperature for up to a year. For optimum freshness, ground flax seed should be ground as needed. Unused ground flax seed can be refrigerated in an airtight container if it will be used in just a matter of days, or it can be stored in the freezer for about a month.

Ground flax can be added to your morning juice or chocolate milk – usually a heaping tablespoon or two with your favorite beverage. Or you can sprinkle ground flax on cereals or yogurt.

Understanding why you eat certain foods is essential in maintaining life-long health habits. Certainly, pleasing taste and visual appeal is one reason we make food choices. Yet, choosing foods that keep our body working as a finely tuned machine is also the goal that healthy-minded individuals strive to achieve.
